07 Dec How to paint the exterior of your Kansas City home
One of the questions I get asked the most is “What’s the best way to paint the exterior of my house?” Since there is no quick answer to this question, I figured I would lay it all out here.
One of the first things you have to do is chose a paint. When painting the exterior of your home, always chose quality over price. At Elite Painting KC, we always go with Sherwin Williams Super Paint or Duration depending on our customer’s budget.
After washing and scraping, it’s time to identify all wood rot and replace it. Rotten wood is worthless to paint and it will continue to deteriorate. This is also a good time to inspect and identify any loose siding and paneling and secure it.
Caulk and Prime. This is the most overlooked step, or a step that most painters cut corners on, but don’t. The best practice is to caulk every seam and nail hole on all the surfaces of the exterior. Also, all of the raw wood that is now exposed from pressure washing and scraping must now be oil primed.
Finally, you’re ready to paint. At Elite Painting KC, we like to spray and back roll all of our exterior coatings when we can. Spraying provides great coverage and a nice even coat. If you don’t have access to a sprayer, you can always rent one or just roll it on. Apply two coats to both the body and trim of your house.
Paint quality, proper prep, and two coats of paint should help you achieve the professional finish most homeowners are looking for. Not only will this process make your home beautiful, but it will protect it for years to come.
